Husband Claims ChatGPT Helped Wife Plot To Poison Him

Jernej Furman, CC BY 2.0, via Wikimedia Commons

A North Carolina man, James Gates, has filed a lawsuit in San Francisco against OpenAI and its chief executive Sam Altman. He alleges ChatGPT fed his estranged wife's suspicions about him and supplied details on poisons and doses after she first began using it for work. He says he fell violently ill in July 2025. None of the allegations have yet been tested in court.
