Hurricane Simon is rapidly strengthening in the eastern Pacific south of Mexico and is forecast to become a dangerous Category 4 storm, the US National Hurricane Center said. The system was about 220 miles south of Manzanillo with hurricane-force winds near its centre. Forecasters warned of life-threatening storm surge, flooding rain and dangerous surf for southwestern and west-central Mexico as the storm approaches the coast over the weekend.
