At least 24 vehicles were set ablaze and foreign-owned shops looted as anti-immigration protests turned violent in Soweto and Durban, South African police say. Unrest followed anger over a Constitutional Court ruling allowing some migrants who entered illegally to apply for asylum. Police fired rubber bullets in Durban. Home Affairs said it will change how it complies after staff were overwhelmed and public-order risks rose.
