How the Escalation Ladder Works in War
"Escalation matrices" are frameworks showing how conflicts intensify, step-by-step. Imagine a ladder: one side takes an action, like Israel expanding strikes on Lebanon, and the other responds, often with increased force, like Hezbollah's attacks. This back-and-forth pushes the conflict to higher levels. In the US-Iran-Israel conflict, each strike and retaliation, from targeting leaders to ongoing campaigns, represents a rung. Understanding this helps explain why actions by one party often lead to a stronger reaction, making de-escalation challenging.
