France eases strict rules on traditional cheeses after drought scorches pastures

Makers of top sellers like Comté are now allowed to buy in outside feed because their usual mountain grass has died. Officials confirmed the temporary exception on Wednesday to support dairy farmers holding strict protected origin labels, which usually ban alternative diets. The historic July dry spell scorched 95% of the mainland, forcing some traditional dairies to halt their work completely.
