Charities can apply to become lead sponsors under the Home Office's new safe and legal refugee routes, modelled on Canada's sponsorship programme. Accredited sponsors will help community groups, churches and universities house and support refugees, with arrivals expected next autumn. Numbers will be capped, starting in the hundreds and growing to the low thousands as illegal migration falls. A refugee work route follows next spring.
