Badenoch urges block on early prisoner releases

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has called on Prime Minister Andy Burnham to revoke the order allowing serious offenders early release from prison. Around 700 prisoners are due to be freed in September under the Sentencing Act 2026, with thousands more becoming eligible later in the year. Badenoch wants emergency legislation passed before Parliament returns on 2 September to exempt violent and sexual offenders permanently.
