Apple has reported stronger-than-expected results in the first quarter under new chief executive John Ternus, who took over in September. Profit rose 12 per cent to $30.71bn in the July to September period, helped by record iPhone revenue and strong growth in China. The figures stood out after disappointing quarterly updates from rivals Alphabet, Amazon and Intel amid investor worries about heavy artificial intelligence spending.
