Antarctic winter sea ice hits third-lowest level on record
New data shows that Antarctic sea ice covered an area of 17.59 million square kilometres when it reached its largest extent for the year on 14 September. The 17.59 million square kilometre extent is the third-smallest winter peak recorded in 48 years of satellite data. While preliminary, one expert called these low values "concerning" but said more time is needed to confirm a structural shift.
