The Labour politician spoke out as the government considers authorising fresh oil and gas extraction from the North Sea. He warned that emergency crews are unprepared for severe flooding triggered by El Nino, a periodic Pacific warming event that can cause colder British winters. The prime minister recently visited Stourbridge in the West Midlands to meet residents who lost their houses to wildfires.
