Why so many earthquakes?

Indonesia sits on the 'Ring of Fire', a horseshoe-shaped area in the Pacific Ocean where several tectonic plates meet. These plates are constantly moving, grinding against each other. When the stress builds up and then releases, it causes earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, making Indonesia one of the most seismically active regions in the world.
