Why is Mars's heat lopsided?

Scientists discovered Mars's southern hemisphere is significantly hotter internally than its north. This uneven heat distribution might be due to the south's thicker crust, which could have acted like a blanket, trapping heat inside billions of years ago. This insulation prevented that region from cooling down as much as the thinner-crusted north.
