Does depth affect earthquake impact?

The Colombian earthquake's depth of 107 kilometres meant its energy was dispersed over a larger area before reaching the surface. Deeper quakes often cause less intense shaking at the epicentre but can be felt over a wider region. Shallower quakes, even if smaller in magnitude, can cause more localised damage.
