Why do tunnels leak?

Tunnel leaks, like the one affecting the Elizabeth line, can happen for several reasons. Groundwater naturally seeps into the surrounding soil, and over time, even well-constructed tunnels can develop small cracks or weaknesses in their waterproofing. This can be exacerbated by ground movement or vibrations, leading to water ingress and the need for repairs.
