Why do temperatures change quickly?

Rapid temperature shifts, like the 8C drop in the story, are often caused by changes in air masses. When a warm air mass is replaced by a colder one, carried by different wind directions, the temperature can fall sharply. Northerly and easterly winds, as mentioned, frequently bring colder air to the UK from polar regions or continental Europe.
