Why close stations for so long?

Closing major stations like Charing Cross and Waterloo East for 22 days allows for extensive, complex engineering work that would be impossible during normal operating hours. This 'blockade' approach, as Network Rail calls it, is often more efficient and ultimately less disruptive than years of weekend closures, ensuring critical infrastructure like the 36-year-old rail equipment and Hungerford Bridge are properly maintained and upgraded for safety and reliability.
