Why are there two Mersey Tunnels?

The Queensway Tunnel, opened in 1934, was the first road tunnel under the Mersey, connecting Liverpool and Birkenhead. Its success led to the Kingsway Tunnel opening in 1971 to handle increased traffic, especially after the M53 motorway was built. This dual infrastructure helps manage the significant daily commuter flow and provides alternative routes, as seen when bus services were re-routed today.
