Why are some areas hit harder?

Even a powerful earthquake like Colombia's 7.4 magnitude event affects different areas unevenly. Factors include proximity to the epicentre, local geology (some ground types amplify shaking), and building quality. Sparsely populated areas might have fewer deaths but still suffer significant structural damage if buildings aren't earthquake-resistant.
