Why are runway lights important?

Runway lights are crucial for guiding pilots, especially in low visibility or at night. They mark the edges, centreline, and end of the runway, helping pilots judge their position and speed. Clipping them, as happened in Munich, indicates the aircraft veered off course or was too close to the edge during a critical phase of flight.
