Why are rival bids so tricky?

Trying to sign a player from a direct rival, especially one who is key to their team and recently signed an extension, is incredibly difficult. Clubs are very reluctant to strengthen competitors, and the asking price would be astronomical. It often takes a truly exceptional offer or a player pushing for a move to make it happen, which isn't the case here.
