Explained in plain English

Why are Belgium's unions striking?

Belgium's government is cutting spending to meet EU rules on national debt and deficits. These rules, known as the Stability and Growth Pact, aim to keep member states' finances healthy. If a country breaks them, the European Commission can start an 'excessive deficit procedure', which can lead to fines. Unions argue these cuts hurt ordinary workers.
