About 30,000 people joined Belgium's national anti-austerity strike in Brussels on Friday as unions marched against budget cuts hitting wages, VAT and working time. Police said the main rally was peaceful but clashed with masked groups near Central Station using tear gas, water cannon and baton charges. Fires were set and city transport was heavily disrupted after a tense week of student clashes in Liege.
