Explained in plain English

What's the history of UK rail?

The UK has one of the world's oldest railway networks, dating back to the early 19th century. It played a huge role in the Industrial Revolution. After nationalisation in 1948, it was privatised in the 1990s. This long history means much of the infrastructure is old, requiring constant investment and maintenance to cope with modern demands and climate challenges.
