What's a 'sigma rating'?

A sigma rating tells scientists how confident they are in a new finding. A higher sigma means it's less likely to be a fluke. For a discovery to be generally accepted, it usually needs a 5 sigma rating. The Bristol team's 2.6 sigma is a promising hint, but it means there's still a significant chance the observation was just random noise.
