What's a 'league phase'?

The Champions League is changing its format to a single 'league phase' instead of the traditional group stage. This means all 36 teams, including the five English clubs mentioned, will be part of one big league table initially. Each team will play eight different opponents, with results determining who progresses to the knockout rounds.
