What was the handover?
The 'handover' refers to the transfer of sovereignty over Hong Kong from the United Kingdom to China in July 1997. This marked the end of over 150 years of British colonial rule and the beginning of Hong Kong's status as a Special Administrative Region of China. Tung Chee-hwa became its first leader after this historic event.
