What is 'toasted skin syndrome'?

This condition, officially called erythema ab igne, is a skin rash caused by prolonged exposure to moderate heat. It typically appears as a net-like pattern of red or brown discolouration. In this story, a boy developed it from his laptop resting on his stomach, but it can also come from things like hot water bottles or even car heaters if used frequently.
