What is rabies?

Rabies is a serious viral infection that affects the brain and nerves. It's usually spread through the bite or scratch of an infected animal, like the bat in the story. If left untreated, it's almost always fatal, which is why Dr Edelman quickly got preventative vaccines before the bat was tested.
