What is 'offside'?

The offside rule prevents attacking players from gaining an unfair advantage by lingering near the opponent's goal. A player is offside if they are nearer to the opponent's goal line than both the ball and the second-to-last opponent when the ball is played. The Haaland goal error involved an offside player's 'probable effect' on a defender.
