What is a tourist tax?

Edinburgh's new policing unit is partly funded by a tourist tax. This is a small charge added to overnight stays in hotels or other accommodation. It's a common way for popular destinations to raise money from visitors, which can then be reinvested into local services, infrastructure, or, as here, public safety initiatives.
