What's a 'tourist tax'?

A tourist tax, or visitor levy, is an extra charge added to overnight stays in hotels, holiday lets, and B&Bs. Councils use the money to fund local services and infrastructure, often to offset the impact of tourism. Edinburgh already has one, and now other mayors across the UK can introduce their own.
