What is a third-place play-off?

In many knockout tournaments, including the World Cup, the two losing semi-finalists play an extra match to decide who finishes third and fourth. While not as prestigious as the final, it offers a chance for a medal and a positive end to the tournament, as England achieved here with their win against France.
