What is a 'stable state'?

In relationships, a 'stable state' means the couple's feelings and interactions are generally consistent and strong enough to withstand everyday challenges. The models suggest each relationship needs a minimum level of strength to stay in this state. If it dips below that threshold, it becomes more vulnerable to breaking apart, much like a balanced ecosystem.
