What is a signalling centre?

A signalling centre is the brain of a railway network, controlling train movements and ensuring safety. When the Manchester centre lost power, it was like the traffic lights going out across a huge area, causing immediate and widespread disruption for passengers in the North West and Midlands, as trains couldn't be safely directed.
