What is a Head of State?

In the UK, the King is the Head of State, a largely ceremonial role. This means he represents the nation on official occasions, both at home and abroad, like this Caribbean tour. The Head of Government, the Prime Minister, handles the day-to-day running of the country. Many Commonwealth nations still recognise the King as their Head of State.
