Explained in plain English

What are US midterms for?

US midterm elections, held halfway through a president's four-year term, determine who controls Congress. Voters elect all 435 members of the House of Representatives and about a third of the 100 Senators. These elections are often seen as a referendum on the sitting president, and it's common for their party to lose seats, as Trump's did.
