What are midterm conventions?

Political parties often hold conventions, especially in the US, to rally support, set agendas, and energise their base. Midterm conventions, like the GOP's in Dallas, happen halfway through a president's four-year term. They're a chance for the party not in the White House to gain momentum, or for the party in power to defend its record, ahead of crucial midterm elections.
