What are flash floods?

Flash floods are sudden, intense floods that happen very quickly, usually within six hours of heavy rainfall or rapid snowmelt. The mountainous terrain of Nepal and Tibet makes them particularly vulnerable, as water rushes down steep slopes, picking up debris and causing widespread destruction, as seen in the recent catastrophic events.
