Explained in plain English

What are banknotes made of?

Modern UK banknotes are printed on polymer, a thin, flexible plastic material. This replaced paper notes to make them more durable, resistant to dirt and moisture, and harder to counterfeit. The move to polymer began in 2016, significantly extending the lifespan of each note.
