How do refunds work for recalls?

When a product like the recalled eggs is deemed unsafe, the seller, such as Kroger or Brookshire, is legally obliged to offer you a refund. You usually return the item to the store where you bought it, even without a receipt sometimes, and they'll give you your money back or a store credit.
