How do investments work?

Investments are how people and companies try to make their money grow over time. Instead of just keeping cash, they buy things like shares in companies, property, or government bonds, hoping these will increase in value. The Rausing family's decision to sell their US shares shows they're moving their investments elsewhere, perhaps to places they think will offer better returns or are less risky.
