How do fossils form?

The T-rex footprints were preserved because soft mud hardened over millions of years. This process, called fossilisation, usually happens when an organism or its trace (like a footprint) is quickly covered by sediment. Over vast timescales, minerals replace the original material or fill the mould, turning it into rock and preserving a snapshot from the past.
