How did the website error happen?
News organisations often prepare articles for multiple possible outcomes of an event, especially for high-profile awards like the Ballon d'Or. It's highly probable that these pre-written pieces, one for each potential winner like Harry Kane or Lionel Messi, were accidentally published prematurely due to a technical glitch or human error, causing the confusion.
