South Africa Opposition Leader Malema Gets Five-Year Sentence
Disqualification as an MP awaits South African opposition leader Julius Malema if his five-year prison sentence is upheld. He was sentenced after being found guilty of illegal gun possession and firing a semi-automatic rifle in public during a 2018 party celebration. Magistrate Twanet Olivier allowed the 45-year-old to appeal the decision, meaning he wasn't immediately taken to prison.
