New analysis suggests UK bumblebee numbers could fall sharply if heatwaves occur with greater frequency and intensity. These furry insects struggle to fly without overheating when temperatures reach around 28C to 32C, and their food supplies also dwindle. Planting native wildflowers or even a small pond can provide vital refuelling stops and shade for them.
