Third of Washington Post staff let go as sports and books sections close
The Washington Post is set to cut around a third of its staff as part of a major organisational overhaul. Executive editor Matt Murray confirmed that the newspaper will close its sports section, discontinue books coverage, and shutter several international bureaux just ahead of the Winter Olympics. Employees were briefed via video call, with management explaining that the paper can no longer attempt to cover every subject. The move has drawn sharp criticism, with former editors accusing owner Jeff Bezos of inflicting serious damage on the publication’s reputation.
