Why London Underground Train Seats Use Bold, Busy Patterns
The vivid, chaotic patterns on London Underground seats aren’t a design accident. The moquette fabric, in use since the 1920s, conceals dirt, stains and fabric wear, reducing cleaning and replacement costs. Its wool-nylon blend resists fading and damage from constant use. Designers intentionally use geometric motifs and dark colours to keep interiors looking clean and consistent, even during rush hours. The same technique is used on buses and national rail services.
