UK investigates foreign money in politics after scandal
The UK government has ordered an independent review into foreign financial interference in domestic politics following the conviction of former MEP Nathan Gill, who received 10.5 years imprisonment for accepting Russian bribes. Housing Secretary Steve Reed announced former civil servant Philip Rycroft will lead the investigation, examining political finance laws, party regulations, and safeguards against illicit foreign money including cryptocurrency donations. The review will assess vulnerabilities exposed by recent cases and recommend strengthening measures against covert foreign influence, with the report due by March 2026.
