Exeter man’s £30,000 train fare fines slashed to £1,154 by judge
Exeter resident Nicholas Tooley, 54, had more than £30,000 in unpaid train fares and court fines slashed to £1,154.30 by Exeter Magistrates’ Court. The Universal Credit claimant repeatedly travelled without tickets between Exeter and Teignmouth since 2017, when fares were £1.80, now £6.60. Judge Stuart Smith limited penalties to recent 2024 offences and warned Tooley to either pay for future trips or stop using trains altogether
