US labels Afghanistan a state sponsor of wrongful detention

The US State Department designated Afghanistan a state sponsor of wrongful detention on Monday, joining Iran on a list of countries accused of detaining US citizens to extract policy concessions. Iran received the same designation on 27 February. US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz said international assistance to Afghanistan should be reviewed given the Taliban government's stance.
